About the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Fish and Kids

Fish and Kids is an education programme run by The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The MSC believes that the next generation needs to be encouraged to understand the importance of marine conservation in helping to secure the future of our seas and realise the MSC’s vision -of the world’s oceans teeming with life and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations.

Through our teaching resources and online children’s activities, we also hope to encourage children to learn where their food come from; about the fishing industry and the livelihoods of those that depend upon it.

Fish and Kids provides children, teachers, parents and caterers the opportunity to find out why choosing sustainable seafood is vital for the future of fish, fishing communities and the environment. The MSC’s Fish and Kids programme has three key aims;
1: To promote the use of certified, traceable and sustainable wild seafood in schools.  To find out more please visit the Get Involved page.'

2: To provide schools a credible way of tracing certified sustainable seafood from plate to fishery

3: To encourage children to learn about the wonderful world of our oceans and marine sustainability through our national curriculum linked teachers education pack (Key stage 1 and Key stage 2).  To find out more please visit theTeachers' pages.

MSC certified schools and universities lead the way for a sustainable seafood future!
Schools and universities that use the MSC blue ecolabel on their menus have worked hard to gain the MSC’s traceability certificate-Chain of Custody- to ensure that the MSC certified can be traced back to the certified sustainable fishery that they came from. Like everyone else in the supply chain, by attaining this certification, schools help to protect the fishers and communities who commit to sustainable practices.

The Marine Stewardship Council

The MSC is an independent, global, non profit organisation that collaborates with fishers, retailers, processors, consumers, NGOs and others to transform the world's seafood markets and promote sustainable wild fishing practices.

The MSC runs a scientific based program for the certification of sustainable fisheries; an ecolabel program to identify products originating from certified fisheries; and supply chain certification to give assurance that MSC labelled fish originates from and can be traced back to an MSC-certified sustainable fishery.

Today, the MSC is recognised as a leader in sustainable wild capture fishery certification with the most globally trusted, recognised and credible seafood ecolabel.
