Cockles

Describe Me

Cockles are small animals inside two pale crinkly, circular shells. These shells protect the meat in the middle, which is the bit that we eat.Cockles are usually between 2cm and 4cm wide.

Fish Food

Cockles are filter-feeders, which means they filter the water around them for microscopic plants and animals to eat.

Find Me

Cockles can be found in cold water areas close to the shore, often living in and around estuaries, where a river runs into a sea.

Dinner Time

There isn’t very much meat inside a cockle, so they’re usually just eaten as a snack at the seaside.

Fishy Fact!

Cockles can be pickled before eating, which means they’re stored in vinegar or saltwater for a long time, it’s not to everyones tastes though!
