Describe Me

Herring are small silvery fish with short fins and lots of shiny scales. Herring are small fish so are rarely found above 40cm long.

Fish Food

They feed on small animals like krill and young crabs floating around in the water.

Find Me

Herring live in very large groups, called shoals, at depths of up to 200m in cold water. MSC certified sustainable herring is caught all around the North-East Atlantic.

Dinner Time

Herring is normally served in a sauce or smoked; smoked herring is often eaten for breakfast and called ‘kippers’. Herring is a very good source of vitamin D.

Fishy Fact!

A snack that some people eat is a herring, pickled in vinegar and wrapped around a gherkin, called a rollmop!
